Wooden 1966 Solo built by David Gibbens of Salcombe. Sail number GBR 982.
I bought this boat last year as an experiment sailing solos. Unfortunately I’ve found I’m too big & heavy for the boat and have bought myself a Finn instead.
The boat is in good condition for its age and the hull is sound.
The last owner stripped the paint and re-finished the whole hull in white epoxy paint. Unfortunately it was not mixed properly and has left a poor finish with lots of paint runs. Despite this, the hull is well protected.
I planned to sand it smooth and apply some more coats to give a better finish but time has not allowed.
The boat comes with a Needle spar mast and boom in good condition with running rigging that is in good condition. There are two mainsails. One is quite old and tatty. The more recent one sets well and would get you up and going in club racing. The lifting rudder is also in good serviceable condition.
There is a road-worthy road trailer and launching trolley in good condition and trailer board.
Boom cover to protect the boat included too.
As shown in the photos, the transom is a single piece of ply which unfortunately has shown some signs of rotting and needs replacement. I’m unfortunately short of time to do this and would rather allow a new owner either choose to finish this themselves or to employ a boat builder for the job. Either way, it is only a small piece of ply and should be an inexpensive repair.
I have sailed the boat several times and found her to be competitive on the racecourse despite my heavy weight slowing her down. The mast, lines, blocks, rudder, boom, cover, trailer and trolley are worth more than I’m asking for the boat. This is a great opportunity to get into Solo sailing at very low cost! Currently at Leigh & Lowton SC in Lancashire.
